Sweet Occasions - Linn B Halton

About the book...
Unknown-472'Katie’s relationship has had more than its fair share of problems. After a difficult few years things begin to pick up and Katie finally realises her dream of opening up a bakery. Sweet Occasions specialises in novelty and celebration cakes, plus the most inspiring range of cupcakes anyone could possibly ask for!

Utilising her passion and skill helps to inject happiness back into her life, but it’s short-lived as things begin to fall apart. The reality is that you need to run a business with your heart AND your head. Help is at hand in the shape of her partner, Steve. He has the necessary experience, but does Katie want to tie herself to him financially, as well as personally?

Then one rainy, wintry day a bedraggled customer steps inside the door to order a cake … Sometimes a turning point centres around one single moment in time: sometimes it takes two Christmases and three birthdays.'

My thoughts...
I was offered an ecopy of this book by Charlotte at Candlelit Tours in exchange for an honest review which I'm more than happy to give.  The cover alone is bound to attract readers in their droves and quite rightly so!

Katie the main character in this book is living the dream - owning and running her own bakery Sweet Occasions!  Things both business wise and relationship wise aren't exactly plain sailing - despite outward appearances.

From the very first chapter I loved Katie, her kind heart and compassion literally poured from the page when meeting a more than a little wet Adam who is wanting a christmas cake to take to his grandmother.

Over the course of the book we get to learn about both Katie and Adam's relationships and family.  Told from both the main characters perspective I couldn't help but be drawn into their lives.  Both Katie and Adam living lives not totally fulfilled yet at the same time both incredibly strong, considerate, compassionate people - always putting others before their own happiness.

Linn gradually peals away the many layers to their characters and with each one I'm hooked a bit more.  This isn't a straightforward romance/contemporary novel but one with depth to not only the main characters but the supporting cast too.  I really cared what happened to them in a way that is only possible when a character is gradually introduced -  love, loyalty, friendship, confidence and trust are tackled head on.

I think we can all be a bit guilty of heading down a path thinking we know what's best but often not seeing the wood for the trees.  It's difficult to let someone else take control of a part of our lives but distance often allows impartiality.

I lost myself in this book, often willing the characters to open their eyes and just see the relationships developing around them - not in frustration but like an anxious mother watching their children grow. I highly recommend this book - thank you Linn for giving me a slice of escapism.

  1. Oh, Dawn ... goodness, what can I say? You felt every little nuance and you have no idea how much a writer appreciates that! I always let the characters lead me where they want to go and when the final word was written I knew that I would really miss them. It's not hard to write when you love the characters you create. Grace was based on my late mum, and you've made me feel that I did her justice. Thanks so much for taking the time to read, review and be a part of the tour. Lxx
