"Shannon's Law Pinterest Reveal Pre-Launch Virtual Book Tour".
It gives me great pleasure to be part of Emma Calin's Pinterest Reveal of her new novel Shannon's Law. My post is about the animals that feature in her novel.
Animals from Shannon’s Law
In Shannon's Law, the animal population probably equals that of the humans. Some only receive a passing glance such as a pair pigeons locked in an endless courtship. A tea-cup pig gets a mention but I was already over length on the book and didn't give it any dialogue.
There is a Rottweiler guard dog called Lupo. This creature has one function. The poor beast doesn't receive any doggy chocolate treats or get taken to the village pub to be patted. There is a chorus line of cats. This was a subject I approached with extreme care. No cats were harmed in the creation of this product. Like me, Shannon suffers from allergy to cats. As a kid I had constant asthma and a cat. I left home and was cured. These days I start to sneeze and wheeze anywhere near them.
The whole book has that horsey aristocratic royal family flavour. The Queen has major stables and trainers. In head scarf and wellington boots she always looks at her most relaxed and smiling with horses. A pony called “Thunderbolt” makes a contribution to the plot. A longhorn cow turns up to watch when there is clearly a love clinch in the air.

A singing bird at the scene of a dead body builds itself into the narrative and Shannon's first encounter with bats and peacocks causes her to wonder if country life is for her after all.
My own attitude to animals is that they are far nicer from a distance. Like Shannon, I am from the streets of London. Also like her I feel that if my creator had wanted me to ride horses he would have altered the design of my hip joints. In Shannon's Law she faces a horse and has only a childhood ride on a donkey to use as a guide.
“Are they carnivorous?” she asked, realizing the boy didn’t know when she was joking. “Should I jump on its back calling ‘Hi-ho Silver’ and tame it?”
The lad stared at her and shook his head.
About the book...
Wild child inner-city cop Shannon Aguerri walks a dangerous line between her methods and justice. When the bosses lose their nerve, after yet another maverick mission, she is transferred to green pastures to play out the role of a routine village cop. When she encounters signs of slave and drug trafficking she homes in on serious millionaire criminals.
As a loner she has attracted men but nothing has stuck. When she meets Spencer, the hunky and widowed Earl of Bloxington, there is an immediate rapport between them. Their social differences mean nothing to their passion and need.
Already in the mix is an upper class female rival – who has long plotted her way into the Earl's bed. The jealousy is an evil shade of green and the anger is a violent scarlet.
Often inhibited by a sense of duty and honour, Spencer is slow to reveal his feelings. When Shannon confronts him with the need to choose between her word and that of her rival, he does not immediately support her.
All issues are set aside, when they are forced together to carry out a desperate rescue mission. Their love is stronger than everything ranged against them.
